If there was one person I could meet (dead or alive) it would be him. Evolution by natural selection is the best fucking idea anyone ever had. It's so beautifully simple, yet so hard to grasp for far too many people. It seems so obvious once you understand it, but it seems like it took forever to discover.

I read this about 8 years ago and it forever changed my life. While I have always been an atheist, and believed that humans came about through natural processes with nothing supernatural existing in the universe, I did not fully understand the beauty of natural selection until I read this book. No other book has had such an impact on my life.

Anthro

Anthro has warped my brain. I constantly look at humans like I'm watching other primates. Observing humans at a party is no different than watching some monkeys mating rituals to me. It has made it difficult to socialize in some settings. I'm constantly wondering how and why certain behaviors I witness are adaptive in an evolutionary context.

faceresearch.org does some interesting work in facial attractiveness. Fluctuating asymmetry and masculinization/femininization of faces seems to be a really important part of human evolution. It's interesting to see the results confirmed in real life. I've noticed men with more masculinized features do seem to have higher status in many contexts.

One of the more interesting findings from face research is that women prefer feminized faces for long term relationships, and more masculinized faces for short term (especially during ovulation). This seems to imply that natural selection was favoring women who got some feminized face male as a resource provider, and cheated on him while ovulating to get knocked up by a masculinized/symmetrical male. The evolution of cuckolding and probably male sexual jealousy as a result. Fascinating stuff.

Yea I'm happy. Yes Obama isn't nearly as progressive as I'd like, but damn I really feel good about this win. I know he isn't going to save us from destroying ourselves, but I can't help but be really fucking happy for a minute here.

Plus I am just loving seeing all the sore loser right wingers right now. It's a beautiful thing.
